The Complete "Silent Knight" Turbo Boost

Post by Joe Huth » Wed May 24, 2006 12:46 pm

Here's something I pieced together a few year's back....

The turbo boost in "Silent Knight" (the first one) has Michael and KITT jumping over a car. In the episode, the jump cuts to many different angles. On the blooper tape, it shows this same jump but the scene starts with KITT in the air and then landing (doesn't show the take off). So, I took footage from the episode and spliced it together with the blooper video to make what appears to be a seemless jump from takeoff to landing. There is no audio and the clip runs only a few seconds. Check it out:

Ouch. Poor KITT. He really went for a nose-dive! Those cars I think are a bit too front-heavy for jumping though. Even though they are RWD.

Did they have to use a new KITT every time they had to do a different jump?

Not really...that's a bit exaggerated. In reality, they built a special "jump car" which was built totally differently than a normal Trans-Am (for one, it had leaf springs in the front). I'm sure they had more than one of these during the life of the show, but it was designed to have easily removable body panels and such, and the car itself was built to withstand jumps to the extent that they could do it (hence the front leaf springs)...the suspension was more like that of a truck. In some parts, they even had fake rubber body panels over the real ones. If you ever see a close-up of the jump car, it doesn't look much like KITT at all...only very superficially. They didn't just trash a Trans-Am every time they wanted to jump, they used a variety of different cars. They had a pretty much normal Trans-Am with a much more powerful engine that they used for "skiing" and burnouts and such (you can recognize that one by the normal steering wheel), then they had a car that was only used for the interior and close-up views...that one is pretty much "KITT" as we know him. There's a post elsewhere in this forum that shows a close-up of the jump car. It has what looks like black paper or plastic over the windows. I don't know of any spot in the show where you can get a good look at the interior of the jump car, but if you could I'm sure it would look like a race car with roll bars and such.

It seems that they miscalculated the weight in that jump, because he usually never nose dived that much, it didn't even seem to translate that well into the show, I mean even though it was cut in the show, you could tell that they were going to smack the pavement hard...
