Michael is not true blood to the family. He just happens to be a lookalike to Garthe after surgery. Wilton adopted him to carry on the good will of the Knight clan. Garthe betrayed and violated his father's purpose. So Michael is involuntarily brought in to help Wilton reach his goal.
Garthe and Jennifer have no actual relation to Michael. He is only given the name to be represented as a follower of Wilton's dream. Garthe probably considered Michael to be like a brother who kept him from getting everything he thought he rightfully deserved. But they are not truly kin to eachother.

I don't understand something here. Wilton Knight was this great man who wanted the world to be rid of all evil, yet his family was made up of nefarious people. Garthe is a worldwide criminal. Elizabeth is a traitorous fiend. And Jennifer is an arrogant witch trying to remove everybody. But I know she had a change of heart once realizing Michael was the exact opposite of her brother.
Why would Wilton's wife and son be so full of hatred when he himself thinks great things should be done for the world?

I think of them as being a little more distinct... The Knight Foundation would be everything under the Knight umbrella, all of Wilton's creations. Knight Industries was a research division that made the high-tech toys (and possibly sold products to governments or companies for revenue.) FLAG was a separate division that worked on social change. We mostly just saw the small amount of FLAG projects that required someone to operate above the law.

That is what I thought.

^That's most likely how things happened with Wilton Knight, as well. He becomes filthy-stinkin'-rich from running Knight Industries, sets up the Knight Foundation for his philanthropic work, and toward the end, sets up FLAG as an organization within the Knight Foundation after getting ripped off by Cameron Zachary and Tanya Walker.

I just thought I would share this with you, hopefully the writers of the Knight Rider Legacy don't mind, but it is a little tidbit from their book about Knight Industries.
"Knight Industries was the parent company, and was divided into five branches.
1) The Fiscal Branch
2) The Knight Foundation
3) R & D Branch
4) The Medical Branch
5) The Legal Branch
Just a little bit of info there for fun.
Thanks to the Knight Rider Legacy once again.
