My K.I.T.T

Post by Trans Am Erik »

I just bought the car a couple weeks ago. It began life as a 91 Formula. It now has all the correct 82 bodywork and a season 3/4 Knight nose. The interior is the correct tan PMD interior. It has a 383 under the hood, overdrive trans with a shift kit, and a 410 rear gear.

That car looks great. Will you be keeping the doors the way they are or replacing them with the 82 doors?also will you be refitting the interior dashboard/consoles?

Awesome! I wish you the best in your replica. I'm curious about making or buying a custom nose for my Pontiac Sunfire. It's kinda hard for a Non-Trans Am to make a Knight Inspired Vehicle. But I remember seeing a KITT Nissan somewhere.

Thanks you guys. I will be changing the look of the doors to the 82. However, I don't have to change the doord themselves. The lower ground effects are plastic add-ons that I will remove and fill the holes in the doors and rocker panels. For the Knight interior I want too go with the 2 TV dash (i like that one better), the lower console, and upper console. It will have the gullwing steering wheel but I want to see if I could get one with a steel frame and an OEM way to attach it for safe driving. I just don't know the different companies out there making the Knight parts.

If you have airbags, like you seem to have one in the steering wheel, can you replace it? In Finland it's forbidden to remove safety equipment, such as airbags, from a car.

I'm also modifying my Trans Am. It's a '89 Trans Am GTA and I'm gonna make it look like an '82. I have bought a new spoiler, like the one you have, to replace the Aerowing, and it's currently being painted. I also purchased a set of taillights from an '82 Trans Am and the rear fender flares I'll install once I got the GTA's ground effects taken off. A nose from '83 Firebird awaits me as well as a "powerbulge"-hood (my GTA has the louvred one).

I'm just wondering what I'll have to do to fit the '82 taillights into the '89. The light-patterns seems similiar, so I guess no wiring is needed. Taillights of a Trans Am are different than those Firebirds and Formulas have. So I guess the light-bulbs are the same size?

Hi guys, thanks for the support and encouragement. I am starting to plot and plan just what I want the car to be able to do when completed. I'm up in the air now about 1 or 2 monitor dash. I like the 2 monitors, but I wonder how difficult it will be able to use the small monitors. Also, for the guages I was wondering about using LCD instruments out of an 84 Corvette. The dash will have a working PC with WIFI and a few video games. The buttons on the uper and lower consoles will be a mini keyboard and auxilary keyboard, and a finger pad mouse.

Shadowrider: I hope your tail light conversion goes smoother than the one on my other Trans Am. I converted an 81 T/A into a 77 Bandit T/A. With my friends help we had to change the whole tail pan behind the tail lights, the wiring harness, and even the fuel tank to make the liscence plate gas door work.

Wow, you've really got a lot done in just a couple of weeks! Most conversions take years. Congrats on your find and your speedy progress thus far!

Here is the Corvette digital dash I mentioned earlier. Picture these guages adapted to a single TV dash. I would move the center (fuel, temp, etc) screen to the right of the tach to make room for KITT's voice box. One thing I like is when the car is turned off, the dash would look solid black.

Well, it will be a long time in the making. I have some rust to fix on the body, then fill all the holes from the factory ground effects before I can start paint prep. I ordered an LED light for the front the other day. The interior is still in the plotting and planning process. I know that I want a working PC in the dash, I just have to decide what I want the car to do. If i don't go with the Corvette guages I may get a season 4 set up.

Very nice, looks like a fun project. I've got a dumb question for everyone on here: What happened to the classifieds on this website? I can't seem to find it anymore

Are you sure it was on this site?

Knight Registries had a classifieds section, but their site was having problems for a while and they haven't fully restored it. Although their main "classifieds" link is not active, they have a classifieds section in their forum.
