Replica steering wheels
Do the owners of Kitt replicas actually drive them around on the road?
I thought the "gull wing" steering wheel in Kitt wasn't legal in..well...any contry... which prompted me to think...how do they get these Kitt replicas registered to drive on the roads?

him around with that steering wheel..
Cops pull me over on a regular basis, just to see the car..
My KITT is based on a 1982 Trans Am.. if it was a 1990-92 where
Trans Ams and Firbirds of that year had AIR BAGS then there is a
problem having Knight Rider style streeing wheels.
WHY??
Cause it is illegal to dissconnect any SRS factory installed equipment
in Canada.
You can get a permit to dissconnect your SRS equipment.. But it
cost big bucks..
A tip for those of you who are planning to build your own KITT/KARR
replica
DON'T BUILD ONE OUT OF A 1990 OR NEWER Trans AM
Trust me, you'll run into more headaches than you'll think...
Stick with 82-89

The steering wheels are a possible legal issue in some states, though from what I've read over at the message boards in http://www.knightregistries.com, this law isn't generally enforced.
But the law does state that you must have a full-round steering wheel within a certain diameter to be "legal". Again, this isn't typically enforced...unless you get pulled over by a cop who hasn't had his donut.

Well thank you.. I love it so much..
But I am upgrading KITT as we speak.. He'll have a new paint job
at the end of this month and new electronics as well..Not that there
is any problems with what I have.. It's just I wanna go more authentic.
I am keeping the 3/4 season dash. I didn't really like it at first but it
started to grow on me.. I will be building a 1/2 season KITT in the
winter. I will be using Don Colie's Products.
My electronics will be going up for sale soon.. I will be offering them
for a very good price.. Everything works very well, no probs with
them at all..
Any questions please e-mail me at knight_rider_1@hotmail.com
Oh yeah my front nose is up for sale now ...

Yes I will be getting a 9 inch monitor for my dash.. (if I can find one)aussieknight wrote:Nice package, buddy! I love it! Are you planning to fit a larger TV/monitor in your dash? You know, like this?......
I've been having a hard time finding a 9 inch TV for my dash.. Lots
of Black and whites but no color.. And I am not paying $400 US
for one out of the states, when I know I can get them for around
$200 CND
If any of you know someone who has one or know of a place that
sells them cheap PLEASE let me know...

I will be keeping the 3/4 season dash, I'm only upgrading thecloudkitt wrote:Well after you make the season 1/2 I'd be happy to take the 3/4 off your hands
electronics. I will be building a complete 1/2 season dash (dash and
electronics) But I will be selling off my 3/4 season electronics (no dash)
unless I get a new 3/4 season dash to go with my electronics, we'll see.
I am just currently pricing stuff out now.. I have yet still to decide which
company my 3/4 season electronics are comming from...
Please let me know if any of you would like to purchese my stuff
I will be reasonable, and all of it works great..
But please be serious!!! I'm not selling my stuff to make money for
my new stuff, I am selling it cause I won't need them anymore..
Otherwise I will keep them for a later project..
E-mail me if you know anyone who is interested...
Make sure you e-mail me at.. knight_rider_1@hotmail.com

Well, you seem to have answered the question thats been at the back of my head for sometime, thanks. Tell me, who did you come across all this info? when you say solid core, I assume most of the gull wheels are made in a hollow fibre-glass construction.Matrixra wrote:If the Gullwing is made of a solid construction with a solid core it is legal to use in England. In fact, my local police have no problems with anything on my conversion. They did comment about the scanner light however, but trucks seem to have them on some times so they are quite open to it.
Steve
Also, how did you get around the lack of indicators on the front side of the nose?

Is that red scanner light legal in USA and england?
In New Zealand its illegal to have a red light anywhere on the front of a vehicle.

Some series 1 noses come with blackout covers so you can use the standard indicators but the majority don't (eg the series 3-4 noses), so how do you overcome that?aussieknight wrote:Couldn't you just use the standard indicators behind the blackout covers? Aren't they acrylic or something?
