There have been some things that I haven't liked in this series early on, but not too much this second half and this side turbo boost is definitely something I've liked! Nice treat! 
Regarding the plate, I think it only exists in attack mode. The "KR" disappeared from KITT's underbelly and from the SSC's computer monitors in the first episode of the retooling.

The side turbo boost was really impressive and I hope to see more unique stunts such as that accomplished on the show because I think that with the showcasing of unique stunts happening with K.I.3.T. will really bring in more of an audience to households because the stunts from TOS did capture alot of viewers attention.
