I googled for pics and was mildly shocked about it - ok, technically, it was like Transformer Prowl in G1, so all in black and a red scanner... still a hard to image picture, if I play my mind theater with the car driving in the desert... What do you think?

Would the Datsun 280ZX have worked as KI2T?

I've not heard that before. I think they made the right choice for with th Trans-Am anyway.

Actually, wasn't there a Datsun 280zx in the original pilot?
The chick with the microfilm was driving it then she got pulled by the dodgy cop guy dude about 10 minutes at the beginning?
