Nitpick: uploading files

Post by Michael Pajaro » Thu Sep 25, 2008 12:17 am

It was absolutely critical that Torres had access to the files Sarah took, that's why he insisted that KITT divert some power to upload them.

That would seem to go against KITT's programming to protect human life (assuming that program is intact from the 2-hour movie.)

But more importantly: How much ambient heat (not direct fire) could a data disk take? I propose that the files were never in any danger. KITT was not concerned about being damaged by the fire; he simply had to wait for the flames to burn out. If Sarah and Michael died, KITT could still physically bring the data disk to the Satellite Surveillance Chamber.

Uploading the files gained them nothing and put Michael and Sarah at further risk. Counter-arguments?

I avoided the "live" thread and just wanted to watch the episode from the couch. Now I see Neil beat me to it with the uploading files issue. Still, does it make sense?

Hmmm, you're right.

There was no real point of uploading the files. KITT was not in danger of being destroyed by the fire and so were the files. There was nothing to gain from rushing it. Torres can definitely wait for KITT to safely arrive then gather the files. I think that scene is just there to show us how Torres think about his subordinates and serve to be a plot point for the viewers to gain some insight about Torres' character. Made us hate him even more, I think.

I think this conversation underlines it:
Graiman: "My daughter's in there!"
Torres: "I know." (yet he proceeds to insist they upload the data)
"If Darth Vader had a KITT bathroom, then he would have ruled the galaxy far far away since a long long time ago..." *LASER!* :good:

I remember in the end that Torres said he can't let Michael remember his past. Remember that Michael had an arguement with Carrie about a leak and someone knowing he was at the consolate. So maybe Torres was hoping to dispose of Michael? Maybe he was the leak? I don't know but it came time mind that was one reason he engangered their lives. But I would think that KITT would override that danger and do what he could to protect them, and not allow a file upload in the first place.

For KITT, Michael and Sarah's lives were definitely more important than the files and the mission itself. He was even going to ram the doors if Billy couldn't open them in time. This shows that KITT values their lives higher than the KITT Cave or maybe even the foundation itself?

I picked that one up as well, but didn't find a way to rationalize it. I took it for what it was; a plot device for arbitrary tension. Not a good thing, admittedly and hopefully will be avoided in the future.
