Knight Rider's New KITT The Cover on 5.0 Mustang Magazine

Post by kitt2k » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:54 pm

The August issue features the new KITT on the cover, plus a seven page article with some very nice pictures.

Of interest is the Shelby lettered car that has shown up at the promotional events. Turns out this car is a stock GT500 with a modified hood and rims put together specifically for touring, and is NOT a film car.

Ah thanks KNIGHT98K, I had to squint to read that one, but I think it was saying that this car is the real GT 500 with the real hood unlike the ones used for filming that had a fiberglass hood. At the time there weren’t any real GT 500 KRs avalible to use. It looks like this is the one that made apperences in NYC and Carlisle. I was wondering if Ford owns this one and not NBC.

They have an online article about it too:

and here's a better shot of that vehicle's scanner:

"Knight Rider Shelby GT 500 - Snake KITT" (What no more KR "King of the Road" tag attached to it now?)

Interesting name they're giving the "new" KITT. I also notice they keep dropping hints about the Attack KITT but it looks like they're referring to the old version from the backdoor pilot. I find it confusing they're also mixing and matching the older Shelby KITT pics with the newest one.

The lettering across the front and newer "classic" looking scanner is how to tell the difference.

Still it looks like the KI "snake" is here to stay while the KI "horsehead" has been sent to the glue factory.

Rock on VipRider, rock on.

I'd also like to point out that this article confirms all of our suspicions about Ford's stranglehold over the design of the car and the pressing need to advertise their product above all else. Here's hoping story will prevail over sponsorship in September.

But hey they're getting their money's worth so mission accomplished!

With the emphasis of the snake over the horse in this new attitude for Knight Rider, it sort of gives new meaning to the phrase "Don't Tread on Me" eh?

Replace old glory with a the Knight Industries horsehead emblem and the snake with a Shelby cobra and you get the idea. Might make a good t-shirt too for us old school fans.

And all this time I figured that Attack K.I.T.T. auction was just to get rid of the cars since they knew they were going to redesign it. Of course it turns out that it was just another promotion opportunity for Ford. Whoever struck this deal on Ford's side must have gotten one hell of a promotion.

Well, actually I think KITT looks pretty cool on these images.

But they really should remove the SHELBY letters and the snake symbols. Everyone knows it's a Shelby Mustang GT500 KR, and there are so many articles that say this, you don't need the logos on the car.

I mean, ask anyone what kind of car the old KITT was, everyone knows it's a Pontiac Trans Am, though it was only mentioned in the first episodes, later they even had to call KITT a T-Top. But still everyone knows. So need for the logos.

Apart from that, the car looks great from the outside. (we all know KITT need a real dash for the inside)

Exactly! I have nothing against sponsorship provided it's not over-the-top and in-your-face. I have a feeling this is all going to backfire if the Ford advertising is this blatant.

Micheal must be so proud of his son's car on the cover.

I agree with you guys, as I have mentioned before that the Shelby lettering and emblems should not stay on the car. I’m hoping this car is just for promotional purposes, for Ford that is, and the real KITT will be different. But at the same time I have no problem with Ford's involvement in the show. They are giving the show more money to really help it be the cool show we want it to be. And Ford really seems to understand KR and KITT. The commercials they did during the movie should attest to this. I think they nailed KITT’s personality better than NBC did.

I fully agree, Sue! I loved the commercials. They were very much like KITT! :)

I wouldn't count on it, Sue. Funny thing is, believe it or not I actually think the Mustang looks nicer with the Shelby lettering across it. My only objections to it are because classic K.I.T.T. was completely blacked out and I'd like to see the Mustang do the same for consistency purposes. At the same time I can see why the emblems would remain on the normal version of the car for disguise purposes. Let's see if Ford lets the crew remove the Cobra emblems from the Attack car now...

The scanner looks a little odd but it doesn't worry me... As we heard, the physical scanner rarely worked when they were filming the 2-hour movie so they switched to CG. Regardless of how they finally created the look, ON SCREEN the scanner looked fantastic. While I don't think this scanner looks great in close-up photos, it probably will look different on TV.

A Trans Am KITT toured the country back when the original series was on and it had a bad-looking scanner as well.

The Shelby lettering? Meh, I can take it or leave it at this point.

I think I could stand it if it said Shelby on his bum, but not on his nose, not right under his scanner! …But one thing about KI3T being a Mustang that I absolutely love! Shelby stripes!
Hummm, I wonder…

No, I guess not.
I still love them on KI3T though.
