Greetings and my take on the pilot.

Post by KamenRider » Mon Feb 18, 2008 2:11 pm

Hey folks. First post where so I would just like to say to all the Knight Rider fans out there. Oh and if you're wondering about the nick, let's just say there is a show in Japan has a show with "Rider" in the name that with quite a long legacy of it's own.

Anyway's, onto the pilot. Overall, I had much more fun with this than any post-classic series Knight Rider attempts ever made.

Before watching I like many folks felt a little letdown that they didn't choose a car with a slope style front like a Trans-Am. I guess I'm very used to a sleek look for KITT. But the Mustang quickly began to grow on me especially because I think the way they worked in the scanner light to the Mustangs design was rather clever.

I thought the movie itself really did have the "feel" for lack of a better term like the classic series in many respects or at least like something from the era. It was a good balance between an 80's show and modern stuff. I'm just happy they didn't opt for CSI shakey -am nonsense or scenes where everything's always lit dark even at 12 in the afternoon. Ever notice nobody in CSI can be bothered to turn on an overhead light?

I was actually VERY pleased with Val Kilmer's performance as KITT. I thought he nailed it really. I haven't had this much fun listening to Val since he was Doc Holiday! The new voicebox was interesting with the horizontal equalizer effect combined with KITT using images as a way to convey what he's saying. While different, I think in tandem with that light effect serves exactly it's intended function. To give KITT a "face" when he's talking.

I can agree with some of the other posters here that the continuity is a bit dodgy in regards to the creation of the original KITT but I think there's wiggle room to work Graiman into that era without really corrupting anything from the classic series.

I only have two real issues. The fact that KITT's shell isn't bullet proof without the nanotech is wonky and really a downgrade from the original model. I would hope this is something that can be corrected it it goes to series. Heck they could even acknowledge in on-camera as something they apply based on the events of pilot.

The other was I actually wanted Michael Knight to have a bit more a role. But at the same time I understand that they want to let the new car and the new protag stand on their own. Still, the scene at grave sold me the moment Michael brought up Wilton telling him one man can make a difference.

Afterall, all the great or fun heroes have some sort of mantra somewhere in their stories that even if it's not something they themselves say, it sums up why they do what they do. For my money, that line is sort of the heart and soul of everything Knight Rider is about. KITT is an awesome tool of a new age like any technology, but it is still human beings who decide how to use it. One human. One man..makes a difference.

There's many questions the pilot leaves unanswered and all sort of little things they could have done, but I think it is important to keep in mind that this is meant to set up a series. So many of the things we looked for in the pilot could easily show up in the series with entire episodes devoted to them.

Here's hoping it gets picked up. :kitt:

Thanks, buddy, I appreciate your input. Sounded like we had some opinions in common.

My initial impressions :

I liked that K.I.T.T. didn’t let those bad guys in the SUV die. K.I.T.T. would never ever do that on purpose.

I didn’t mind the lesbianism reference, at all.

What I did mind was the allusion to Mike’s polygamy. What do I tell my 9 year old son? We laughed it off but it still felt awkward. Just a little more imagination guys, there were plenty of ways we could have been shown he was a pure player. Really.

I liked the Mustang. Bumblebee is the Camaro now so that was taken. Personally, my best would’ve been an all-black Dodge Charger. Never mind that Dukes of Hazzard had a Charger. Their remake was so bad it buried the franchise for another 25 years, at least. Someone wanted to have a Trans-Am again. Dude, unless you want to CGI one in there, those cars just don’t exist anymore, how would they be supposed to collect enough of them to work with?

I O.K. the cast, I O.K. new K.I.T.T.’s voice/personality, I even O.K. the plot (more plausible, please !!! more scientific facts please !!!)

I HATED that there wasn’t ONE TURBOBOOST !!! Come on, even with the $ they got from Ford for all that slo-mo logo air-time, THEY COULDN’T SACRIFICE at least one? Send one up in the air will ya !?!?! That’s an implausible element people would not only still tolerate, they would eat it up ! I would.

ALL in ALL, I reserve final assessment for a later day. However, I can already say it deserves a passing grade. 6, 7 maybe even 7,5 / 10. More like 6 or 7. But solid enough to deserve continuation. When it comes down to it, YES, I want to see what else will happen to Traceur, Graimans, Mustang, etc… Most importantly, my thirst for an indestructible, 167mi/gal, 627miles in 3h17mn, A.I. car is still far from being quenched. Especially if it starts jumping over things again. Verdict : slight adjustments away from very good series material. I wanna see more.

I'm somewhat familiar with Kamen Rider and I made a joke referring to it back before Charles and Sarah's last names were changed Graiman. It was originally Kamen and immediately made me think of Kamen Rider.

I kind of wish the VM would be up higher, somewhere similar to where the original KITT's was placed. In a way I think the nanotech and KITT be able to take the bullets how it did was a slight improvement at least in the manner of safety. The car absorbs the bullets momentum on impact and so there's no ricochet as there was with the original, I think it was only shown to ricochet in the pilot when Tanya Walker was killed but during the series there should have probably been plenty of people getting hit with the ricochet bullets that were flying around. The things that bugged me were how easily the car was hacked into and the silly notion that KITT couldn't just cut off all wireless connections. Plus once shut off it was just a normal car, that's a huge weakness compared to the original. Maybe it could be explained that weaknesses like that were introduced in case of the car going crazy and being pretty much unstoppable. With how easily KITT can seemingly be hacked, that might have been a good idea. >_>

If they want to explain the lack of MBS, aside from saying it was lost or something, they could call the nanotech's lack of durability in normal mode as a safety feature.... The weird thing was that in "attack mode" the car seemed significantly more durable... *Shrugs*

It bugs me a bit that they made it seem like Charles was the guy that did everything when the continuity firmly established the fact that there was more than one person and a team of scientist that worked on KARR and the original KITT. I could see Charles being the guy that along with Wilton, designed many of the features and whatever and the other scientist (specifically the ones from JYD) were there to assist and over see their part with Charles being the main guy in charge of the entire project, with Wilton financing and over seeing it. Wilton wasn't just a rich old guy.

It's interesting that there was a Trans-Am in the garage, I wonder if that was just a very hard to see nod or if it'll actually come into play. It looks like the ratings were very good so I think a series is inevitable. Hopefully they go in an opposite direction of Bionic Woman, heh.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :skar:

Ah, the lesbian thing. I'd actually forgotten about that. I didn't have a problem with it exactly because I don't have a problem with lesbians or gay people and characters. I just thought it was a bit of a groaner because the way it was done seemed like a very gratuitously placed "OMG LESBIANS!" kind of moment and also, they're basically just ripping off Rene Montoya from Batman the Animated Series who was put into the comics as a lesbian character.

I don't know. Maybe they were just trying to have a little fun with it. Establishing Mike isn't the only crime-fighting hero who gets the girl that you'll see on this show.
