S1 Ep08 "No Big Thing" Major mistake spotted

Post by MonzterMan » Fri Feb 24, 2006 3:51 am

In the episode where Devon gets pulled over by the two corrupt police men and Michael drives cross country to save a friend, i found a funny mistake.
Halfway trough the episode in some of the stock driving footage there is a another kitt parked by the side of the road.

Image
I guess the car ran out of gas when filming

I wrote "major mistake" in the topic because there arent supposed to be 2 kitt's at this time in the series, or maybe it was a hint of things to come?

Yeah, it's hard to believe that they left that in, I mean they'd have to realize one of their props was on the side of the road, but they must have been really desperate for some footage of KITT cruising, and thought, aw, nobody will notice... Right!

glad to see someone else spotted it.

I posted a similar pic a while back (over on the other board). Forgot to post it up here though lol.

Ha! That is great! Must have been KITT's mysterious clone.

you know whats really funny, this has happened in about every big car action show in the 80s

happend in the dukes of hazzard in the pilot, you can see general lee parked in one of the spots on the town square while the dukes are being chased in it by rosco, woops

just yesterday someone pointed out on the hardcastle and mccormick boards a pic from "mr hardcastle goes to washington" showing a coyote on a flatbed that is on the side of the road just as you see the coyote your supposed to be seeing pass it (look closely at the arrow, you'll see the "real" coyote's fender, as the "oops" car is in plane view on the flatbed

Thats right gundam, back in the 80s the tv image wasnt as crispy clear as todays dvd image, which ment that could get away with allot of stuff.

and pdennis93 i know exactly what you are talking about, the exact same thing happens in the season 1 episode "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" where there is an incar shot of the General Lee supposed to be racing other cars, but in the background the orange charger, yellow mustang and brown porsche are parked neatly by the side of the road!.

You might have a little trouble finding the boom microphones, as Universal supposedly cropped some shots to fix the problem.

They have, episodes like Just My Bill and Slaming Sammy's had evident boom mics appearing on the old DVD's I have but are not visible on the Season sets

Wow, I've seen GMLOGMD tons of times, and never spotted the second General, you guys have amazing eyes...

Guessing it was just a green screen effect, since they probably didn't have 2 Generals on the Knight Rider set...

SH i dont think using blue/green screens was an option they could afford back then.
Was this technology even invented back in 82?
For these in-car shots they usually use cut-up cars that either are put on a trailer or are towed by using a tow truck like mechanism where the front wheels are lifted of the ground, called a Tow-dolly. Below are some examples

This was used in the new Dukes movie

I always liked that approach of filming in cars the best. Even nowadays some shows still use what's called "Poor Man's Process," which is taking filmed footage of scenery and putting it on a blue screen to provide background in a non-moving car. I'm surprised shows like 24 rely on that as you'd think it would be the other way around with newer shows.

That's what I meant, it seemed like a scene where there was a screen of footage taken behind a non-moving car...

Yeah, some movies use this process for humor, surprising that they use it in serious shows...

Do you mean Back Projection?

Well its not that suprising if they use that method in virtually all of the James Bond films, and whats the budget of those films compared to a TV series? :D
