I'm currently making pixel art drawings of Kitt's consoles and I browsed through Season 2 to get a good view on that version of the Lower Console. People all over the vide world, the buttons of that console originate from a Cash Register machine!
There are buttons like ITEM, QTY (probably for quantity) and even PRICE with capital block letters!
How humiliating for poor Kitt! They had no money to fix him up so they grabbed a broken cash register machine and used its buttons for Kitt's console.
Have a look, you'll find out that I'm not lying. A good source for pics is Mouth of the Snake, part 2, when Kitt recieves the data about the stolen weapons.

Thanks, Joe!
If you watch closely and lighten the image a bit, you can see ITEM, QTY and PRICE clearly as cristal.

Gee. Why didn't they just put all numbers? Seems alittle strange to put those buttons in there.

That's pretty amusing. Great find, HungarianKnight. Although...K.I.T.T. did have an on-board cash dispenser...

I don't understand why they used a cash register machine for it's buttons. Mattel was the company who designed the dashboard, why did they use cash register buttons? Maybe Michael Knight had his own business on the side and he needed to give people a receipt..lol

I can see it...
20 years ago in the Universal optical transfer department...
"Yeah we'll just darken it to where ya can't read those buttons...20 years from now, no one is gonna remember this anyway..."
riiiiiiiight......

Vert interesting! Many televisions show have done that technique of using parts from ordinary things like what was mentioned in this thread. I still rememder from Star Trek: The Next Generation where Jordi LaForge's VISOR was made out of hair clips.

Oh yeah, Levar Burton had a "Reading Rainbow" special show on how things were done on the The Next Generation. His visor was made out of a girls "banana clip". I had forgotten about that until you said something...hehe.

Oh dear. That's another illusion shattered. Kitt used to be a cash register.

You gotta remember the centerconsole in the pics here are the 2nd season version, NOT the original one designed by Michael Scheffe from Mattel. The original centerconsole along with all other original KITT parts is used in the pilot and throughout 1st season.
They appearantly "updated" the centerconsole for 2nd season and probably it's Universal's prop department's work instead of Scheffe's.

Well, Maybe KITT's scanner is actually a barcode reader?

Man, that's unbelievably funny.
It's amazing what technology 20 years later can reveal about those shows.
