Why only four seasons?

The more I watch the reruns and the more I treasure them, the more it makes me ask, why was Knight Rider only 4 seasons? Everyone calls Knight Rider one of the biggest and most fun shows of the 80s. Shouldn't such a popular show have run at least 6 or 8 seasons? What caused NBC to cancel it? What were the Neilson ratings like in each of the four seasons?

Well from what I can remember from other posts, the funding for the show ran out and they just didn't have enough money for the show to go on for anymore seasons. Also by the 4th seasons, they ratings were really down (reason that SPM and RCIII emerged) and I think NBC just pulled the plug. It does suck that the show only lasted four seasons.

I was bummed when "Knight Rider" was cancelled, and syndication didn't do the show justice when it was shown in half-hour shows, so having the episodes on DVD is a help to me, because that way, I don't miss the show so much.
Maybe the show ran its course, but I still missed the show after it was cancelled.

Because after the 4th season the ratings went down and high cost of special effects.
