I really wish message boards would do away with systems like that. The "rank" has a tendency to go to peoples head.
The "noob" stigma seems to last longer that way. I visit a lot of message boards but only post (infrequently) on a few. I hate people that have been members for six months that have a million posts strutting around like little tin-plated generals because they have more stars than Patton next to their screen name. So if you're still a "private" you don't really matter, even though you've been part of the community longer. IGN.com message boards are a great example of this phenomenom. Also, a particular Star Wars figure board I visit is becoming that way too. This is why message boards are great examples of "grandfallons." Nothing is more frustrating than a 14-year-old jumping your bones because you viloated some arcane internet message board rule.
I think people should just hang around and be judged by the content of their posts and thoughts, not by some false ranking system. I just wouldn't worry to much about it. Don't really care if I'm a recruit, Grand Moff or whatever. I'm just here to interact with other fans

Looking back at that thread and how it works on this board, it's more of a playfull roleplay type of thing. However, some boards take it a little too seriously.

I use the ranks too, but as an admin I have a hard time figuring how exactly it should go. And I agree - it shouldn't matter. I remember when neps had to reset things and our rankings fell a little (due to some posts weren't counted any longer). It didn't matter to me. All that matters is I have fun conversing with folks on the board.
