After just watching a Speed Racer video with the legendary Mach5, I was struck with the similarities to KITT. I watched Speed Racer jump over obstacles, repel bullets and numerous other things when I was about 5. Watching it now, though, the pointed nose with the smiley grin, the low mounted driving lights, I just felt that maybe Glen Larson was a bit of a fan too. Anyone else here catch the series? The Mach5 featured steering-wheel mounted buttons, bullet-proof exterior, was the fastest car on the road, could drive underwater, just to name a few functions. She was sleek, man...

What, no-one agrees? You guys not seen it before?

Speed Racer Or KNight Rider , I used to watch it also on Cartoon Network yrs ago , and they even had a new Speed Racer series that showed on sundays ,


I think that was around '94-97'

but one thing i did notice was the functions .

Like that funny TurboJump thing . but it had ramps shooting hard at the ground creating a lift force . it was a pretty good show though

i know the answer to that. speed racer came first in the 60's.

lol Speed Racer's awesome. And you know what's funny, I was just watching an episode of KR on my pooter the other day and it dawned on me that they are pretty similar. I only thought about the fact that they can both jump, though It'd make sense a lot of sense if KR was inspired by Speed though... but you know, that talking VW Bug could've inspired it, too

There was this one episode where Speed had to race against a "moster car", which was this huge truck which had guns built in, was also bullet proof, and SO reminded me of a certain truck used in a couple of Knight Rider episodes....hmmm...what truck was that now?

I was obsessed with that show when I was little! I mentioned the Mach 5 in that topic from a long time ago called "KITT vs other cars" and no one seemed to notice. So I figured Speed Racer was a no-go here.

Hmmm....sorry for the double-up. Tried to edit one but somehow duplicated it. I must have missed that reference, cloudkitt. I reckon if we interviewed Mr Larson, he'd fess up to being a fan of Speed Racer.

That large truck reminds me of Goliath.... so I can see how they could be alike in ways.

I thought I was the only KR fan who had a Speed Racer affliction lol...although I was actually a fan of KR first, I didn't see Speed Racer until I was in my teens in the late 80s/early 90s on MTV here in the States. I thought that KR and SR eps had a lot of similarities myself...like the time Speed saved the other racer from the volcano, and the KR ep where they had to cross the lava...stupid little things like that caught my attention lol.

See, I saw Speed Racer when i was 4 and loved it. (I was young enough to not notice all the HORRIBLE dubbing;)) I started liking KR when I was 10 or so. maybe a bit younger

I use to watch G Force alot when I was younger.

The concept of the Mammoth Car is a lot like Goliath, it sure looks like KR was inspired by Speed Racer in more ways than just the cars being bulletproof and launching into the air! Wouldn't that be somethin' if one of the original creators just came out 'n' said they got the idea from Speed?

Some would say the idea came from the Dukes of Hazard.

I cannot remember how far apart KR was from DOH.

The General Lee wasn't BP, but they loved to jump over things and crash into stuff.
