How about TKR on DVD?

Seeing as how basically every TV program within the last 5 years or so is currently available on DVD by season these days, I was thinking how about bringing TKR to DVD. The whole set could have the entire shows run, and shouldn't be too horribly pricey.

I'm surprised it hasn't hapend yet. At least Universal could try to get some money back on the project by doing this. I don't think they would run into the prohibitive music rights costs like is currently the case with the original show.

What do y'all think?

Er, my petition is for the original series friend. ;)

But as for TKR, yes I'd love to see it on DVD. Its never been seen on TV in the UK since its original airing however. Not sure if that bodes well for a DVD release.

Stranger things have happened though. :)

1) It doesn't hurt to have the address of the petition.
2) It's not the first one to have been done, and Universal has a tendency of not listening to the net. I would love to see Sith work on a snail mail one or a print out one of some sort for mail-in.

It isn't cheap to release a series on DVD, even a bare-bones DVD. I think Universal has many other series with better chances to make money than TKR.

Internet petitions: Ack. I actively oppose them.

Yeah I suppose, Michael Pajaro. I'm just really wanting to see the show again after reading about it in the Knight Rider Legacy.

I have KRO on tape somewhere, I wish I knew where!

PS: That petition rocks. I hope it is successfull!

Yes, thats true. Its approaching 200 signatures now, and I have been inspired by a friend of mine that organised a Street Hawk online petition. When his reached around 1000 signatures, he received an e-mail from Universal Playback saying that they had been made aware of the petition, and hence work was underway on the entire Street Hawk series to be on DVD. Ok... so there were only 12 episodes... but it got their attention. ;)

If we manage to reach a thousand, which I hope we will (someday), and we have still got no word, then I may have a go at stage 2 of the plan and arranging the snail mail shot. But this is where the petition comes in handy again. Everyone who signs the petition, gives an e-mail address. Thus details could be organised pretty swiftly. Lets see how it goes. :)

I have to admit, I've been skeptical about online petitions and the effect they have. Most achieve nothing. But some... especially ones aimed at the entertainment sector, tend to get noticed. And within the last month we've seen the infamous Saruman petition make the headlines, as well as the Deus Ex 2 campaign (gamers will know what I'm referring to ;)). With the added news of the Street Hawk success, I'm not giving up just yet. :)

Well, at least Universal Playback will listen, but that won't do much for us over here, since Universal America sold off the release license to CH. But basically for regular KR, you might be spinning your wheels for a bit. Both companies have been working on a full release all along, but can't.

Why?

The song clearances. And not all the songs have come into free domain yet.

But I still wish you luck, and I hope that you get at least the names to prove that there is an interest. If anything that is more important than anything else, to prove that there is an interest.

It least KR's song clearances aren't as bad as the ones for Miami Vice. I was was reading it would cost somewhere in the several millions to clear those and bring the series to DVD.

Ouch!

It's not that far off. It cost me quite a bit just to clear the songs for airplay on KRadio, and that exact same situation but on a higher level is what is being faced by the DVD producers. It's quite a pain in the rear situation. Everybody wants their piece of the profit pie.

Wouldn't it be cheaper though for KR.

I was reading that they used cover bands because it was cheaper than using the real recording artist like Miami Vice did.

I work in the television business. I've been in on the meetings where a company already makes a decision to bring back a show (this is for cable reruns) and then after they start getting fan mail, they respond by saying "we listened to you!". Call me a cynical old man if you like, but regardless of what Universal Playback said, I can not believe Street Hawk is coming to DVD because of an internet petition. I've just seen too much of the behind-the-scenes goings on.

They used cover bands for some, but when you get clearances on music for re-release, it doesn't matter if you did use cover bands, because you still have to clear the song for republication. When you are adding a song to a story, you have to get clearance with the artist and the writer, which is why they go for general cover bands. But on a DVD/Video release, you have to still get new clearance from the writer. (Thank you EVER so much RIAA)

You may be right. I'm not 100% on what Universal said to him, and quite obviously they didn't decide to make the series purely on the strength of an online petition.

I'm not saying the KR petition will coax Universal into getting more DVDs out. In fact, as you stated (and I agree with you) it almost certainly won't - by itself. But if their marketing research team are scouring the internet, I would like to think a petition shows that there is interest in the potential product. In fact, I've watched the petition gradually sliding up the Internet search engines. If you type "Knight Rider On DVD" in google for example, you will find it has made its way into the top 5 results. To have gotten up that far, it must have had a fair number of hits.

If it starts to outrank their own website, it will certainly get their attention then.

Haha, I'll bear it in mind. ;) I'll put you under "work in progress".

*pushes mike's hand down to the paper to sign the petition*

Resistance is futile, you can't win Darth, etc etc... blah blah...

I've never seen Street Hawk.

That would be cool if it came out so I could get a chance to check it out.

Oops, sorry Army, we hijacked your thread. But I suppose it does have some relevance. If we are successful with the existing petition, there's no reason why we couldn't try the same approach with TKR. :)

^^No worries :)

I figue a TKR set would make a good companion for the KR set if anything.

But I think KR should come out before TKR.
