KITT's Voice Monitor

First of all I would like to thank the moderators of this board and the creators of this site. I was and still am a Big Knight Rider Fan ever since I was a little kid.
Its awesome now that the old episodes are on Sci-Fi (even though they are edited for time). And I have always wondered in which episodes KITT's monitor's (where it shows him talking just about the steering wheel) change. I know it changes in Knight of the Drones to the look that KITT has in the 3rd season but I am wondering in which episode and under what circumstances in the 1st season it changes from a flash to the three lines or does it just change the way it did from season 3 to season 4 (where instead of Normal Cruise it says Normal)?
If anyone knows it would be greatly apperciated?

Welcome to the forum!
The change from the flashy square modulator to the 3 lines first of all was in Hearts of Stone, which is midway through the first season.
Then the 3 lines are taken all the way up to KOTD, as you said, which appear to be just bigger versions of the 3 lines.
There isn't much of a change from here on in although, in my personal view, after kitt gets destroyed in 'knight of the juggernaut'(4th and final season) that the voice box looks more sleeker and shinier. so there is a slight change, IMO. but that could be just me.

What perpetuated the change from the flashing square in Hearts of Stone? I know that the episode will be on in a week or two, but I was wondering if you knew.
The lines in Knight of the Juggernaut actually changed before KITT was destroyed at the begining of the episode.

Well plot wise it's not really explained, but rather just added. Kitt asks Michael if he likes his new voice modulator, and of course Michael says yes.

Just a note, KARR's voicemod (as shown before HOS in "Trust Doesn't Rust") is much like KITT's future (3-bar) voicemod. The only differences are that KARR's bars are yellow and the outer bars light up from top to botom rather than bottom to top.

Yes, the outer two bars in the aforementioned voice modulator for KARR are each made of two 10 led bargraph displays. Basically, flip the four corner led bargraphs, and you get a sort of crunching effect, or the look of teeth. Whatever image it inspires in your mind, chances are it's probably fairly sinister. I remember seeing that KARR voicebox for the first time. It freaked me out!

Somebody once told me the voice modulator was changed from a red box to the three bars, because the flashing box was like hipnotic or something

Interesting to note that in the novels, this conversation takes place in book number 4 "24 carat assasin" which is the novel version of "mouth of the snake" which is is third from last episode in season 2.
I guess this shows how far out the novels where to the actual tv show.
The list of novels is...
1. Knight Rider (pilot)
2. Trust doesn't rust
3. Hearts of stone
4. 24 Carat assasin (mouth of the snake)

Interesting... Could that be far off? Strobe lights can cause epileptics to have censures, was KITTs old voice box potentially the same?

In some eps, mainly s2, the voicebox sometimes changed to one with a grey outter mod shell with the S1, S2 etc...lights. Not sure if anyone picked upon that or not but i noticed it to be quite frequent in season 2.

Yes it would be.
Flashing lights (especially red) can cause "photosensitive seizures" if the lights flash at rates between 4 and 10 times per second
Japan has made laws about flashing lights on TV after an episode of Pokemon casued 300 odd children all over Japna to be admited to hospital after a scene with flashing lights in it aired.
One of the rules now is...
"Flashing images, especially those with red, should not flicker faster than three times per second. If the image does not have red, it still should not flicker faster than five times per second. "
