are you refering to the engine Mechanismor the fuel type???
if you are refering to the fuel type, I am not sure about KI2T, but KI3T runs on normal gas. we have seen this in the pilot movie.

In TOS, KI2T ran on "anything combustible." I can't remember which episode that was in, but it's one of the ones where Michael has to stop for fuel, and as usual it's a case where the service man tries in vain to cause damage to KITT to get more money out of Michael. He only ran on hydrogen in the season 1 episode "Give Me Liberty...or Give Me Death" for the alternative fuel race.
