These feel like "later" episodes.

I think episode 3 would have felt a lot stronger if it aired much later in the season.
These characters have been working together for months so it was a very big deal to them that Zoe and Billy went into the field. But we (the audience) was only with them for 2 weeks. We hadn't really seen Michael working on missions, so there wasn't anything special (to us) about seeing these newbies give it a try. Suppose we saw 10 episodes and Billy and Zoe never left the KITT cave. When they finally did get outside, then that would be a big deal to us. All of the dialog and humor and tension would have been amplified.
It's a similar issue with the turbo boost. First we saw a night-time launch from a parked position. Then we saw a jump with a mid-air transformation. These are all fine and good, but we still want to see just a "regular" turbo boost.
The stuff they are doing with KITT and the secondary storylines IS cool. But we're not ready for it. We need to establish the baseline first. As so many other people have said, we need to see Michael and KITT. And JUST Michael and KITT. Because if we were comfortable with those two, then the past 2 episodes would have been much more fun.
