The smoke that blows on Kitt's underside when in the lair?

An extremely cool vapor which causes road grime and debris to firm up to the point that the nanotech skin can 'convulse' or ripple underneath it and pop it off. Sort of like twisting an ice cube tray. The debris falls through the grate below where it is collected and scanned for nanites which may have broken loose.

Real answer: To look all cool and mysterious and junk.

Ficton answer (perhaps?): KITT seems to be hooked up to fuel containers shortly before "launch" a lot of the time, and they seem to emit smoke/steam (something). This may be from those containers in storage under the gimbal or off to the sides.
