Sleuth

TOS is back on the Sleuth network. They showed Deadly Maneuvers yesterday. Even though most of us have TOS on DVD, it's nice to see it still in syndication.

Notice though that they're airing it widescreen. I made the comparison and can see more things in the background/sides in WS. You should record it because the versions we have on DVD and VHS are full screen

But.. the original series wasn't shot in Widescreen. So there's no way that Slueth could be showing a widescreen version. Perhaps the channel (or your tv) is just stretching it out to fit a widescreen tv?

I just did a comparison myself and it appears that the Sleuth network is matting to 16x9. Specifically it looks like they are matting the bottom out and keeping the top common while slightly squeezing the image vertically. This is lame. The show was originally shot composed for TV (1.33:1). It's unlikely that the show was shot composed for 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 then center scanned to 1.33:1, although possible. But based on the comparisons it just looks like they're matting it to be cute.
