Yes, that's right. The TV show was set in the actual years they were made. I can't remember the actual episode, but I do remember at the end of that episode before the credits rolled, Michael comes out with a bottle of orange juice and says something along the lines of "1984 freshly squeezed this morning".
It was only that poor excuse of a movie called "Knight Rider 2000" (made in 1991) that was set in the year 2000.
I think the reference to "two thousand" was because of the marketing hype at that time about how technology would dramatically change our lives as we knew it when the new millennium dawned. As we all know (now that we're 7.5 years past that) we have had incredible changes in technology, but not as much as what was perceived 15 years ago.
The number "two thousand" reference in KITT isn't a model reference as such, that's why KARR was never regarded as a model number, just a prototype.
As for the name of the AI in KR2000, some marketing person must have been involved. They figured logic would say to refer to it a "three thousand" but the word three starts with T like two, so logic made them move to the next number four, hence the acronym KIFT ... as I said, it was a poor excuse of a movie ... it is such a shame that Glen wasn't involved with that movie, imagine what could have been if he was ...

Well hopefully we won't have to imagine for too much longer...but they sure are taking their good old time.
