Cross Fire or Turbo

KITT's Fuel Management system seems to be a mystery.Did KITT have
a Cross Fire or Turbo? He had both. When you looked a some screen
shots you could see the Cross Fire system which was on the screen
KITT and some screen shots you could see the Turbo system which
was on the stunt car KITT.The Knight Rider book supports the Cross
Fire while the 1/18 scale die cast model has a Turbo.Depends on what
a person prefers.I like the looks of the Cross Fire system better.

Well KITT is supposed to have a turbine based engine and I would expect it to look quite similar in appearance to the 1989 Batmobile's. Neither crossfire nor turbo setup raises my fancy, they both look old and outdated.

As advanced as KITT was I would never imagine a crossfire under his hood.

My 83 had one and it was a dog. Glad Pontiac did away with those.

For the story part, I think KITT had a Knight Industries Turbine Turbo with modified afterburners.

For the actual cars, there's some info on the Season 1 DVD set on it. I think they did have some cars with Crossfires and some had the Chevy 350. Some (I think the 350s, not sure) had the racing fuel cells in the back trunk/hatch area under the "floor" part.

I'd have to watch the "extras" again sometime to be sure.

For the story part,I do agree that KITT had Turbine Turbo Afterburners.
But,for scene showing it is strange that they didn't "fake the look" when
the scenes were shot. The show's budget had more say in what they
could do.

True. Especially when they would do jumps and you see under the car. Yet, if you got the KITT Kit (or I think it's also at the Knight Rider Archive), you'd see that he had a not-so-stock underside, with rockets on the bottom, and a huge coil-thing for some kind of electromagentic thing I think. But in the show, when he jumped and you got to look at the underside, all that stuff isn't there.

The Kenner car had a neat mock up of the underside. I wish I still had that thing.

Looks like the engine is in the rear (I think, looks more like the underside of a spaceship to tell you the truth)

Army, that would make more sense because of the turbine, but in the series what little peeks there were under KITT's hood showed the engine in the front. For a T/A to have an engine in the rear, I don't know how that could be possible. I'd love to see a pic of the underside of the Kenner KITT. They must have done a great job on the detail and might be one of the most accurate replications ever. :) I wish the die-cast and other models were that accurate.

Yeah, it's kind of strange that the Kenner K.I.T.T. of all cars seems to be one of the most accurate (except for the dashboard and "Knight 2000" logos). It's basically a stock Trans Am with a modified nose and a dashboard; why is it so hard for these companies to be accurate?

I wouldn't care too much what system I had under the hood except that it be highly modified, supercharged and have the potential of horsepower in the range of around 550-700 at least! What can I say, except that when I push down on the accelerator, I want to feel like I just "took off"! :D

I think you mean Crossfire or Carborated.

they didn't have turbos back in 82 that I recall.
But yes, they had tend to show both on occasion.

And go through the door like Michael did when he first met KITT? :P

Let me help you out a bit, Tika :)

P.S. Nothing is really missing from the rear part of the car. The deep slot on the right part is where you adjust KITT's voice with a slider switch (it can be made to speak fast or extremely slow). You need a small stick or a small pinky finger to get in there and do the adjusting.

Hmmm... not what I had first expected. No Electromagnetic distrupter, or rocket boosters in the back, that I could tell. BTW, that orb thing in the front underside... would that be KITT's CPU?

Cool underside nonetheless. I agree, kinda spaceship-like. :)

If that orb is his CPU,then that would explain his appearance in TKR...

My bad guys. I thought the battery hatch thing was in the back for some reason.

Well, the last time I saw mine was in 1994.

That's what I was thinking when I saw it. :)
