Is this really a screen-used KITT?

Post by HondaSiR » Sun Aug 28, 2005 7:16 am

Found this auction in ebay Germany. Seller claims this car was used in the series. Interior looks authentic but the front bumper lacks the turn-signal blackouts for an early season version. What do you guys think? Authentic or not, it sure is attracting a lot of bids.

What makes you think that this is a screen-used KITT? The dash is A REAL FAKE!!! Not even realistic. No... don't think that that is a screen-used KITT.
Michael: Kitt what matters to me is who you are not what you look like. Sure we don't have the car so we can't turbo boost so we can't go over 200 miles an hour but it was all icing on the cake anyway

WOW,

I dunno on this. is there someone who can translate all that?

Those electronics dont look like any conversion companies I know of.
They look very close tothe real car. I would have guessed the dash to
be from Mark but it doesn't have the same angles as Marks. Looks more
like Robs but again, it has some differences to it. Lower console looks
like Lousiells also but again, some differences.

I's like to see more on this if I could translate the language on the
auction. Anyone help on that?

EDIT, look like someone did translate it further down. I didn't catch it.
After close scrutiny, that may very well be the one of the original cars
that made it to a museum down there. There is just to much on that
car that makes me wonder if it is a real one.

I wish there where more pictures to go by.

Could it have been a season 1 car upgraded for use in the later seasons. The weird nose is what perplexes me. Would have been cheaper for the studios to through on a new nose and leave the interior the same and use it for exterior shots only. I don't know.
KITT project is on again!

Currently working on: brand new stock tan interior, almost done!

According to the pics I have (didn't saw it in person) the frontnose looks like the nose in the KITT car that visited here in Finland on summer 1987. It has rounded edges but without turnsignal covers or indents. Also the foglight openings are closed, perhaps with black plexiglass. The dash looks pretty close to that too, except the voicebox and of course the monitors. The car that visited here apparently had manual transmission and the one in the ebay seems to have automatic.
If there was more cars touring europe, maybe the car in guestion could be one of them.

Its always really hard judging whether its a real car or not.... but with the right docs and the Universal plate on the car will 100% back up his claim!

Nick

P.S car looks ok i guess lol

I don't know much about cars or making models of them, but this one does look authentic!! I mean if it isn't it is ONE KICK A$$ Model!!!!!! It would also be nice to see it with the headlights on, because it looks like it is missing a few to me!!

That the guy auctioning KITT off doesn't have any verification from Universal makes it sound a little funny to me. It is a nice car, but if someone bids that much for a screen-used car, they should GET a screen-used car.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say no. The dashboard itself has the glossy finish, which I'm not sure even existed on these cars until the conversion companies offered it. The nose does have that "dip" and rounded edges, but no turn signal blackouts or indents for them. Season 3's nose would be the closest to this one, but it had the indents. The car is too detailed to be a stunt car as well, which also makes me doubt the authenticity of it being "screen used." I think it's just another replica only it has a few parts from a foreign country that we're not used to seeing.

EDIT: There's even what appears to be a car radio in there. Who would install a car radio in a screen used car?

Hm...after reading the English text, I see that the dashboard and wheel have been refurbished. Now I'm not so sure. :?

3 things:

1. The windsheild has a tint strip at the top...NO KITT had a tint strip...the windows were clear all the way to the top...but windsheilds can be replaced...

2. The left (driverside) section of the dash is UNLIKE any conversion companies dash...it does not "slant" in the corner, it's almost straight up and down....if you watch closely in the shows..you will see this dash in the 1st and 2nd season. 3rd season on..it becomes angled sharply.

3. The door handles have "fuel injected" stickers on them...hmmmm...but then again, I don't think Universal expected anyone to notice such small things...as those stickers would not show up in a chase scene or from far away on camera.

.....just a few things I noticed....could be original
I am awaiting pictures from this guy taken before he restored and repainted things.

I don't think that early 3rd gen T/As even had "Fuel Injected" printed on the door handles. Usually Pontiac put that on the front fenders of the cars, I think.

I think your thinking of Camaros with the TPI badges on the fenders and rear bumper. Early third gens had the "Limited Edition" door handle badges I believe. I think the "Fuel Injection" door handle badges were a mid 80s thing (86-89?). I don't recall the late 80s to early 90s ones having such badges.

My car is an 82 and it has the door badges. I think it was for the crossfire
cars. All of my 82 crossfires had the fuel injection door handle. Its a
legit badge!

Is this car missing the pin stripes or streaks across the doors or is it just me?

If you mean the door side protective moldings, then yes, they have been
removed. :D
