what are you going to do with your tapes?

Post by neps » Fri May 21, 2004 10:50 am

I meant to ask this question a long time ago, but I forgot until now.

My question is, if you have taped copies of the episodes... now that the Season 1 DVD is on it's way out, what are you going to do with you tapes? Are you going to keep them, tape over them, trash some keep others? I guess it's dependent on the quality of the DVDs, but whats your gut feeling?

I'm of the feeling that I'll get rid of my home made stuff if the DVDs over the same quality, and keep the purchased items like the Columbia House tapes, although those I'll probably get rid of when I get comfortable enough with the DVDs.

All I know is alot of us are going to be getting some shelf space back.

Currently, I have no idea. I've got numerous tapes, ranging from all the episides aired on channel 5, season 4 on bravo and all the universal playback tapes. They are taking up far too much room (around 40 tapes, ball-park guess). I'll be happy to get rid of all of them. god knows how.....massive tape burning ritual sounds interesting

There's never too little room for Knight Roder :) The tapes will stay right where they are.

I'll keep the vhs-tapes even when (hopefully) the 1st season dvd-box will be published here too with finnish subtitles.
For example, I have now the best of Knight Rider DVD (it's "The Best of Ritari Ässä" here in Finland) which among others has "The Good Knight's Work" episode. That episode will come later from tv and I'm going to record it to VHS tape even I have it on DVD already

Oh man, this is a tough one. I'm sure some of you are crazy like me and simply have a hard time erasing old tapes, simply because you've had them for so long.

The smart thing for me to do would be to scan through the USA & WWOR tapes looking for any Knight Rider promotions during the episodes and keep those, recycling the rest. But realistically I don't see myself doing that and I'll just keep them on shelves in the closet.

The week season 1 was announced I sold all my Columbia House dvd's to a buddy of mine for probably 10-20% of what I paid for them. As for my tapes ( I taped 'em all of tv in order) I'll probably just get rid of them. I havent' had a vcr in years and don't wanna get one now so I'll probably just dump them.

Now if only they would release WKRP in Cincinnati I would be on Cloud 9. :)

I for one, being a poor broke college student living in a too-cramped room in our family's new home here in Maryland, am going to record over the tapes once I can get (hopefully) all 4 seasons on DVD. To me, I love my VHS tapes (and I am definitely like you Mike in that I find it incredibly hard to record over my favorite tapes simply because I'm too sentimental) but I HAVE to make some room in here and that means saying goodbye to tapes that take up too much valuable space. But on the upside, I'll have Knight Rider on DVD finally! :-D

well i have 9 tapes that i made each with about 6 episodes on them back when KR was on USA. those (once the WHOLE series is on DVD) i will just get rid of. then i have the first 12 tapes from columbia house (and the first 4 DVDs from them)...those i will probably sell on ebay.. except maybe the pilot.

well i think ill definitely keep mine
i dunno how many tapes ive got...but i recorded 2 episodes per tape...so quite a few (my math isnt that good)

besides ive put stickers on each tape with the name of the episodes that are on that tape,so it would be kinda hard to recycle anyway

You gotta remember VHS is on it's way out, eventually it'll practically be non existent....my tapes are from the recent bravo showings, i have only one tape which contain a handful of episodes which were screened from the 80's.

So that'll be the only tape that I am keeping, I am throwing the rest because I want as less VHS tapes as possible.

I'm gonna have to decide between transferring those tapes to DVD and recording over them. it'd probably depend on the quality of the DVDs that I make but if they're as good as DVD quality, i might just keep them.

Habing said that, I do have only a few episodes, so i might just record over them.

Everyone seems to be questioning the quality of the DVD's that are being released by Universal vs people's VHS copies. WTF???!!!

Trust me guys, the DVD's will be mint, you'll want to throw away those tapes once you get the discs. We're talking about 450 lines of resolution vs. VHS's 230 lines. The quality will be just fine I'm sure. 8)

A buddy of mine has KR episodes recorded origanally from NBC back in the 80's when the series was airing, on BETA! with original commercials and what not.
Now, that's worth keeping!

I don't own any episodes of Knight Rider on VHS, so I guess I won't be doing anything with the tapes.

I'm looking forward to the DVD releases. I should probably finish my higher-priority collections first, though: The Twilight Zone and Babylon 5.

I got a crazy idea,

How about we give our tapes away. We can pass the joy of knight rider on to someone who maybe never watched the show. No sense in burning anything.

Beta, isn't Sony the only ones who make it anymore?

And folks, I think some need to realize that saving Sci-Fi copies of the shows aren't going to make you a profit on a season that you can get for 40-50 bucks. Don't forget those episodes are syndicut to hell and aren't worth the tape they are recorded on. No offense or anything, just trying to speak some reality here.
