Goliath Returns - minor nitpick

Post by DJGM » Sun Aug 03, 2003 1:36 pm

In the scene from "Goliath Returns", when Adrienne is communicating with the submarine
via radio link, the electronic legend in the background displays the time as "GMT 15:11".
In the next scene, when Garthe tells Devon and April that he's going to overload the
electrical circuitry in the mansion, he starts by saying "Good afternoon . . . ".

Image

Surely if GMT is 15:11, then the time on the US west coast would be 07:11. In that
case, shouldn't Garth have actually said "Good Morning . . . ". Or, with Garthe being
such a nasty so and so, was he trying to fool them into thinking it was afternoon?

Uhmmmmm,

I dont think there is an 8 hour difference between GM time and the west coast. More like 1 or 2. Either way, it is still afternoon and there fore correct. you figure 12:00 hours is noon, so 15:11 is 3:11 pm.

How did you come up with 7:11?

Isn't GMT the time at Greenwich Meridian ??

It's the case, that's why the initials stand for Greenwich Meridian Time. There is indeed normally a gap in time of about 8 or 9 hours with the US West Coast.

Don't forget Greewich is located in England

Time zones, enough to give one a nose bleed.

Mountain Time is -7 hours from GMT. (And technically, thanks to some estimations, is -6)
Pacific Time is -8 hours from GMT. (or -7, depending on how the world jumps, and some schedulers go during certain times of the year, as stated below)

Therefore, if it is 12:00 pm in Los Angeles, it is 8 pm GMT.
Therefore, if it is 15:11 (3:11 pm) GMT, it is in fact 07:11 (7:11 am) in Los Angeles.

Greenwich, England has been the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) since 1884. GMT is sometimes called Greenwich Meridian Time because it is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Remember: Clocks Spring Forward & Fall Back (Fall = Autumn) - details here but GMT remains the same all year around.

Yea, what she said. :) (btw: nice GMT tidbits, will remember those)

Nice eye there DJGM2002! When we watch anything long enough we just pay attention to the background at points, and it can become a nitpikers heaven.

I guess this is another case of the writers not using their brains.

What’s the bet that part of the script was written in the afternoon.... hence the "good afternoon" line :)

I guess we have to expect a certain amount of errors though…. they where working to a deadline after all. I would say making a weekly show would be quite a stressful experience and prone to having mistakes made.

Mountain Time is only one of two things: Mountain Standard Time (MST) or Mountain Daylight Time (MDT), all times within the continental United States are either ST or DT, such as:

Eastern Standard or Daylight time (EST or EDT)
Central Standard or Daylight Time (CST or CDT)
and
Pacific Standard or Daylight Time (PST or PDT)

My only prob with the timezones is that it means that the Knight Radio shows are all in the morning eg 1AM/4AM etc :?

If you check the schedule at knightradio.krfoundation.com, you'll see that a couple of shows start at 8 and 9 pm your time.

http://www.knightradio.krfoundation.com (how a typo can go wrong..... ;) )

And actually, I had moved some of the shows out into replay so that they would be on during prime time in England, but they didn't get that much response. I will probably be moving back replays during the day around September again, for another try. If ya'all will be listening. :)
