Knight Rider on Blu Ray Review Thread

Post by Scott Kirkessner » Sun Oct 16, 2016 6:41 pm

Okay friends! I just ordered the blu-ray set of Knight Rider. Won't be able to watch it for a few weeks, but anyone who has it already, post your thoughts and reviews here! Early reviews from blu-ray.com show the discs are not closed-captioned, Mill Creek did not have the rights for Knight Rider 2000 so that's not included. Apparently the discs are "stacked." Not sure what that means - anyone have photos? Teasers appear to be intact, episodes uncut. Not sure about the music, don't think the folks on the forum over there know the original songs as well as we do.

I looked it up, I guess that means they're in a stacked case (as opposed to the flap thing that some DVDs are in) so you have to be careful with getting them in and out, to avoid scratches. You could always your own buy soft pouches and number them.
I was afraid they were like the one really cheapy DVD I had (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) where you actually have to *turn it over* halfway through the movie.

I'll be watching this thread. I don't have the DVDs.. just been interested in getting them.
Heaven, where all QC only has to be run once.

I read an Amazon review on them that said there are no bonus features but the quality of the video is amazing compared to the DVD. We grew up watching this series with antennas and static on our television sets so DVD is still good enough for me.

Alright I'll be honest, I haven't completely quit KRO yet, but I am laying low for a while until something worth noting pops jo, like this I guess. I think I've seen some footage of thos blu ray thing on youtube and it sure does look amazing, but there's something special about watching it in its original quality on TV on retuns, you know?

It is much clearer than DVD (technically, 2.5 or so times the resolution, from 400+ to 1080)...
The detail is really apparent with outside scenes, as opposed to darker, more dimly lit scenes (thought I'm watching it on a 149" screen / projector)....

I watched all of Knight of the Phoenix last Friday and it never looked so good.
Stacked, yes 4 "boxes" 2 per side, but it looks like only 2 per side, there are 2 discs on each side, stacked on top of each other. I want to see a later (4th season episode and compare it), but for sure much more clear than DVD.
I did not go through it to see if there is any additional / bonus footage, menus are different than the DVD's...
All I saw on first disk was Play All, or Episode Guide (for the separate episodes on that disc), no extras / setup, etc...

I originally bought it from Amazon for $59.99 and they refunded $3.56 cuz the price went down...
For me, for sure worth the price to have the best visible version available...

Well, I still enjoy watching the original airing of the episodes on some cable channels that put re-runs. I mean, yeah, it doesn't look too good obviously, but I sometimes I tend to like that. Puts me through a vintage TV set of the 80's and I get to see what everyone else here saw when KR originally aired back then. But I sure am looking forward to the Blu Ray version no doubt.

Questions I have about the set.

1. Are all the 2 hour episodes in one part or divided into two parts? Hopefully no syndicated 2 parters here.
2. Are all of the original songs intact?
3. Does Knight of the Drones have the correct intro that hides KITT's new dash?
4. Are any episodes missing their teasers?
5. Any bonus features?

Hides KITT's new dash? You mean when Michael steps out of KITT to go to someone's apartment and you can see his new dash inside?

No he.l means the season intro theme song where the season 2 dash is shown until the big reveal of the season 3 dash. See they changed it up one of those 2 ways I keep forgetting when it came to the season 3 intro. Between that and the season DVD having different music for certain episodes, missing or changed sounds and music for lost knights ejector seat or the phone not ringing but Michael picking it up in ice bandits, or how Kitts engine sound is gone but you can hear seagulls, the dancer in deadly knightshade dancing to no music at all instead of a prince song. Those are just some of the messed up things when we went from broadcast episodes on TV to DVD and now I'm guessing by Ray.

Rumor has it at the other forum that Knight of the Drones is split in two. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry for being slightly off topic but was just wondering, how long does it take for the admins at KRR to activate your account? Signed up several days ago and still no email.

Bad news folks. TBH I am not sure I even want the set now and might refuse delivery or return it... I have to wonder if any of the other episodes are cut?

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Mill Creek Entertainment with your comments regarding the recent Knight Rider complete series releases. With reference to the episode in question, our company utilized the masters provided to us by the content rights holder. The original masters were not available for us. There isn’t any plans for a revision to the discs found in the complete series sets. We hope this information is helpful and thank you for your patronage.

Sincerely,

If Knight of the Drones is the only 2 hour episode in two parts, it was most likely done to avoid the Prince song because that scene is usually cut out of the two part syndicated version. Don't know why they wouldn't just use the silent version from the dvd but I have seen this situation before. Curious to see how they have handled Dead of Knight seeing as how it wasn't on Netflix and last I looked wasn't available as a digital download either, again probably because of a Prince song. Could someone check that episode to see if its cut or if the silent dvd version is used?

So it sounds like Mill Creek just put syndicated TV versions on a Blu-ray? They must be better than this?? But I read somewhere that they even had a TV logo in the bottom corner??? Mill Creek should be very ashamed!!!

I finally sprung for the Japanese Blu-rays and they are the best so far, all songs and footage included is the best part. They are lacking the teasers, but that's not a biggy for me. Knight of the Drones is the same intro as our DVD version. And still missing Stereo sound for Season 4 :-(

Anyway, I did rip the Japanese Blu-ray set on to my computer with makemkv, so that I don't have to deal with popping in discs anymore and so now I have 750GB of HD Knight Rider goodness in my Plex to enjoy anytime!

So anybody verify if Mill Creek used syndicated or not? Aparently they are overseas. Hard to believe we are going backwords in terms of quality, I mean not picture quality, but in terms of being complete.

Sorry for repeating this post from another thread, but I suspect some episodes may be a little shorter than the way they originally aired on NBC. "Knight of the Drones" is definitely shorter on the Blu-Ray. It is the two-part Syndicated version, and not the two-hour feature version.

The following regular episodes all run shorter than normal, and I do not know if they were like that originally, or if they are definitely edited. If anyone has the original NBC broadcasts, please confirm:

"Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular"
"No Big Thing"
"Trust Doesn't Rust"
"Hearts of Stone"
"Silent Knight"
"Custom Made Killer"
"Knight and Knerd"

Even sadder knowing watching episodes online give you all the stuff they don't right now with this bluray bs...

This Blu-Ray has the show remastered by Universal that all releases around the world for Blu-Ray would or should have including Japan. Also it had nothing to do with Mill Creek being too cheap to pay for the episodes to put on the discs to be as they originally aired. Universal restored Knight Rider mainly for channels and streaming services not for Blu-Ray and Universal most likely didn't put them as they were when they originally aired as both are only an after thought for older shows so Mill creek should get no blame for Universal's work.

Here some of the caps the Blu-Ray site has and if you want to see the rest go to the link I posted before then right click them into a new tab. There are no TV logos on the Blu-ray as can be seen in the caps.

Bluray BS is right, talk about letting the fans down! They figured there are not many fans, and the ones there are - are too old to remember clearly how great it was - and so they won't mind if we @&^# it up a little bit in order to turn a tiny bit of profit...?
