Dash Update

Post by themarvelous3 » Mon Sep 27, 2004 3:12 pm

just to keep you up to date, using just the wires that were attatched to my original Analog dash, i have on my digital dash working gueages for:
RPM,
Speed,
Oil,
Temp,
Battery Charge

and i think if i didnt have a completely full tank of gas, i’d be able to figure out which wire that was too. i wish i hadnt filled up my tank because then i could begin putting the disply IN my dash instead of it laying on my passenger side floor : ) but at least i know how fast i'm going! i'll post pics when i start putting it in the dash. thanks for everyone's insight!

p.s. - i may tinker with trying to get the onboard computer check running in the future but this is all i wanted for now so i'm happy!

D****************MNIT!!

so i got everything that i wanted working - well cept the mileage screen but i'm gonna take that out and put in a small digital TV screen and hook it up to a portable DVD player anyway - and as i was wedging it back into my dash...CRACK! there goes the RPM screen. AHHHHHHHH! so now i gotta go find ANOTHER dash just for that screen. unless someone knows where i can get just that screen. needless to say, i removed the other LCD screens before continuing the insertion. looks sweet though! i'll finish up the trim and take some pictures tomorrow...and call junk yards

Me too, I've been there and the feeling sucks. Just be more light-handed next time to minimize the chances of breakage.

Darn! :( Sorry to hear about the bad luck. You might want to try eBay as well. I've got good parts and stuff for my car from there.

I like what you're doing with the steering wheel. Although a fully circular wheel would provide better control than KITT's would, at least your wheel's "handles" have their curvature centered at the axis of the wheel. Very cool.

VERY KNIGHT INDUSTRIES LIKE! :o The steering wheel thing- I see a lot people who are doing that. Where did you get the KNIGHT 2000 badge from? EXCELENT JOB! :P

i need to update those pics. i found some red plastic that i cut to put behind the gauges and it looks SWEET! its all red when lit now. i'll get some pics soon. THANKS!

(personally i have much more control with that steering wheel than i ever did with my full one. and i drive pretty crazy sometimes. i really REALLY want to get into stunt driving but the training is EXPENSIVE! so for now i just teach myself)

i assume you mean about the center piece in my steering wheel. its the plastic keychain from the "key car" toy that was made. it was hotwheels sized and plastic with a spring in the back where you stuck the key and it shot off. one of the cheepo toys made : )

i also replaced the stock underlays for the coloring with some really nice translucent RED fiberglass and it looks HOT! its all red and very bright. i was thinking about taking a voice modulator for a replica, turning it on it's side and placing it in the dash here:

theres nothing behind this screen for a good 4 - 5 inches so i'd have room that way. anyone know the dimensions of a voice mod? (thats where my mileage is supposed to be but i couldnt get it operating so i figured i'd do this or stick a nice digital TV in there and play Knight Rider all the time)

something like this:

or maybe flipped the other way. i would make the writing turned so it would be readable of course. i would want it to look like it was supposed to be that way; not like i turned it sideways. dont want to have to crane my neck to read the readouts : )

The best configuration for me is the last pic. I could never like a voice module in a sideways position, I'm sure KITT would disapprove of it.

themarvelous3, are you building all these digital dash components yourself? I have been wanting to create a sort of "universal" digital gauges for my car.... but never had the time nor money to do it.

not sure if i understand what you mean. i got the dash from an 87 (or so) GTA. they were stock. i dont know what i'm going to do about the Voice Mod. if i cant get it in seperate pieces, i'm going to just have to put it in sideways like the first picture mock up of it above.

I liked the 2nd last voice mod pic. Simple yet nice. :) The last one is good too and probably more accurate though.
