My topic at NBC.com: NBC, you got your hit. Now go for it.

Post by Luis » Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:07 pm

Ok, let' see now why 13 million people watched the show yesterday:

1. The geeks watched because of the tech (nano skin, AI, etc)
2. The gearheads watched it because of the GT500KR
3. The girls watched because of Justin
4. The Hoff's fans watched it because of... The Hoff
5. The 40 and older watched it because of tradional American values including accountability, reponsability and honesty
6. The Knight Rider hardcore fans watched it because they miss KITT
7. The general public watched it because they heard Knight Rider was back.

Those 7 factors include a huge chunck of the 19-49 demo. They all work, make money, buy DVDs and cars. The beauty of Knight Rider is that it's an all-inclusive show.

There's a hunger right now for a show that honors an Iraq veteran. People also feel a great need to believe that things will get better -- that someone out there cares for them and will stop at nothing to stop injustice and war. This man can be Mike Knight if you play your cards right.

So, hear the fans out. Fix the minor problems. Give the show the money it needs. Take the risk and be campy and fun. Give the fans their turboboost. Believe in the dream.

Knight Rider was huge when computers were almost an alien species and the Internet didn't have the web and Youtube. Knight Rider can be a true cultural phenomenon, now, BECAUSE of those two.

You got your hit. Now go for it.

Thanks. I'm hoping one of the suits reads it.

They need this show to fill the space created by the end of Bionic Woman. It will grab that audience and expand it.

NOT TRUE FOR ME! I'm over 40 and I watched it to be ENTERTAINED! By the time I hit my mid-20s (even before that already) I already knew about accountability, responsibility and honesty. And I didn't learn it from some damn TV show! I learned it by living LIFE.

I don't think I'm in the minority either on this. Though lately judging from some of the complains I see on the board from very new members, it seems that is all people know is to be negative.

I watched it wanting to be entertained. I was entertained. I enjoyed it. I wasn't watching it to learn what I already know or if it was something homely or wholesome (I hate those types of shows anyway). I watched it because I LOVE cars. I love robots and AI. I love Sci-Fi. I wanted to see how they brought back something I grew up with - a show about a talking car (which is why I watched it as a kid anyway).

It's about a talking car and how a computerized, robotic car can be of great help to our society. A society which is rougher, darker and more violent than it was in the 80s (which is what they are trying to establish). If people would look at how our robotic creations can help us then maybe they can see some inspiration in this.

Are you a geek? Are you a gearhead? Then you're included in the other categories :)

yes, I'm a geek. :) I am also a Linux web server admin, web developer and programmer at a job I work at. I have a nearly 21-yr. old Pontiac 6000 I spent a lot of time patching up and working on the engine, replacing the computer, replacing the radiator, fan motor, etc. (unfortunately, rust is getting to it so I have to replace the poor old car soon). I love cars and I also build model car kits. I love Herbie, loved the Cars and Transformer movie, have The Fast and The Furious. I even used to run an online car club for GM A-Body cars. Any time I get a car, I usually try to find it's shop manual on eBay or someplace. So I can fix the thing myself if possible. So yeah, I'm a gearhead too, of sorts. :)

Oh yeah, and I have a couple robots. :)

So I guess I do qualify for at least TWO categories. I'm over 40 and don't qualify for the over 40 category which well... seemed to make me feel left out. :sniff: ok, no it didn't. LOL! but just wanted to point out that not everyone 40 and over are the same.

Or am I just very different?

Hi Guys,

I'm from Europe and as you all know we don't have much muscle cars over here. But still, my point is that the car was great even for someone who is not used to them.

I really liked the old shows, I watched all episodes and all other KR movies. This one definitly is a hit and I'd really like to see it go into the series.

The movie had some bad moments:
- some animations were crapy
- kitt should really overtake this SUV's (kitt's computer was down remember so no appologies about human safety)
- some more kitt scenes would be cool (make kitt the star of the show)
- movie could be longer :)

Ohh, I liked Morphing... it's the future!

GO GO series!!!

As much as KI3T is a prototype, unfinished and untested, the same could be said of the pilot. More so, it wasn't a true pilot but a "backdoor pilot". But what is a backdoor pilot?

Backdoor pilots are made on the cheap, with heavy merchandise and guaranteed distribution. In short, the Knight Rider 2-hour movie was already paid off before it aired on Feb. 17.

Once there was a man... and his dream. The new Knight Rider was a dream as well, a product of 37-year-old Ben Silverman. He saw the viability of a new series, he believed in the Knight Rider mythos and he was the one who took the biggest risks.

More than paying for itself in advance, Ben's strategy has paid off. Knight Rider captured the totality of the 18-49 demographic in Feb. 17. It got extensive coverage in all kinds of media -- enthusiast, general, specialist -- and galvanized literally the whole country on a weekend where not many watched TV.

Back to prototypes and pilots, it's natural for a pilot to have pacing problems, weird characterization (threesome / gay FBI agent), not enough action, cheesy CGI and "all too simple" plot. It's natural and expected. The best of the best in TV shows always have problems with their first episodes. If we take Six Feet Under as an example, the first episode of every season (excluding the very first one) was bad. Sometimes tedious, sometimes confusing, always unsatisfying.

To make matters worse, Knight Rider went against a cult, established and older competitor: itself, twenty-five years ago. DVD sets remain on sale and the classic Knight Rider remains being broadcast. In every second of the new show, fans all around America -- and later, the world -- would (and did) measure it against Knight Rider, 1982.

So the new show succeeds and grabs 13 million viewers. It shatters previous records, this time competing against Hollywood blockbusters, originals and serialized TV movies. Against all the negative criticism, from fans and movie critics alike, it succeeds.

If a flawed, sometimes plodding pilot achieves this, what to say of a well-thought, adequately funded show? What can we expect of something made for fans, by fans but at the same time finally in tune with the 21st century?

In one word... Greatness.

At last.
