Nobody knows ... they never gave any real indication. But you can assume that they were extremely unfriendly for "the gang" to not latch on to him/her ;)

The semi did drive itself in season 4. In seasons 1-3 its anybody's guess if the semi was already capable of doing such a feat or if a FLAG employee was behind the wheel.

i must have missed those episodes. i thought RC3 drove it in season 4. i know there were times in one of the other seasons where it showed a guy driving it.

Thats on topic isn't it.......

I'll try to answer it, in "D" the auto box decides what gear the car goes in where as when he sticks it in "2" or "1" thats a forced mode for the gearbox.

I'm sure someone whose more mechanically minded will answer it better.

The novelizations made up a name for the guy -- Gates Cashman if I remember correctly (which is always an iffy proposition with me). But yes, it is odd that until RC, the driver was never included in anything or even mentioned. Oh well.

does anyone have actual proof that the semi drove itself in season 4 or was this just speculation?
if memory serves me correctly, RC3 drove it in season 4. am i wrong?

RC3 drove it in Season 4. In the Episode "The Wrong Crowd" RC3 was driving the truck with his feet up on the dash watching a basketball game. He had the truck in Auto Pilot. (Strange aint it?) And their was a gruop of bikers who thought the truck was filled with a beer shipment. So they hijacked the truck.

Something to ponder:
Since Semi trucks are heavy duty and they are Manual Transmissions and have anywhere from 7-18 speeds (gears) If the semi was in Auto Pilot, wouldn't the shifter lever be all over the place shifting?

There are semi trucks out there that have automatic transmissions. They are rare though and are sought after by some truckers probably because it makes their work easier when driving long distances. Not sure how durable they are though when compared with the stick shifts.

This would be true if the Semi was accelerating or climbing a hill, but in this episode the episode was crusing at a steady speed on a level road, so no, the stick wouldn't be moving all over the place.

The problem with "Auto" boxes in Semi's is that you don't have a great enough range of gears, You need a manual so that you can pick the right gear for the right terrain (Low range, Mid range or High range!) and to help with the fuel economy.
