Because it was not filmed with Widescreen in mind therefore if you cropped it into Widescreen your destroying the directors vision.

I for one loved every minute of this film and I wasn't a real big fan of the series. great action, awesome stunts (stay through the credits for the out-takes of the general, worth the money right there).
